Have you ever flipped on the lights only to see your room suddenly bathed in a dim yellow light? It's far from cozy, and certainly doesn't feel like home. The good news is that you don't have to be stuck in a yellow cave for long! Check out these simple solutions for better lighting in your apartment.
Make your Space More Light-Friendly
It's pretty simple: dirty blocks light. Check out the current lights in your space. When was the last time someone cleaned them? Washing the inside of light fixtures and even windows is not usually on everyone's to-do list when they move in or out of an apartment, so there could be several years-worth of dust hiding in and around those areas. For cleaning fixtures, carefully unscrew and remove the glass cover, then wash in warm, soapy water. For windows, just get out a bottle of glass cleaner and give them a good wipe.
Add More Lights
As a general rule, each room should have at three different sources of light. Overhead lighting is notoriously unflattering, so bring in a few large, free-standing or table lamps so you don't need to rely on the overhead light as much. Placing a lamp in the corner allows for light to bounce of the walls, brightening the room. For smaller spaces, like a kitchen or bathroom, consider under-cabinet lights.
Replace Ugly Fixtures
This can be as simple as finding a new lampshade that fits better with your decor or installing something completely new. Either way, you'll be able to create the vibe in your space exactly the way you want it. If you do chose to install something yourself, remember to disconnect the power before you touch any wires. If you're feeling crafty, check out how to make your own DIY lampshade.
