A pair of legs sticking out of a dryer

To paraphrase a well-known quote: nothing in this world is certain, except for death, taxes, and laundry. There’s no other way to spin it—you have to consider how you’re going to wash your clothes when you’re searching for the right apartment.

The majority of the available apartments on Apartments.com feature in-unit washers and dryers, washer-dryer hookups, or access to on-site laundry facilities. But which is the best deal? Let’s weigh the pros and cons.

In-Unit Washers and Dryers

Pros: In-unit washers and dryers are by far the most convenient option, especially for renters who don’t already have their own set. You can take care of accidents and spills right away when you live within feet of a washer and dryer. You also don’t have to pay any major upfront costs when your rental comes with these.

Cons: Alternatively, you might forget about your laundry when you have other chores to attend to at home. There’s a solid chance you could have to deal with mildew on items forgotten in the washer, or wrinkled clothes left sitting in the dryer for too long. Your landlord may also charge you slightly higher rent for this amenity, in addition to a higher energy bill.

Washer-Dryer Hookups

Pros: Rentals with washer-dryer hookups are a fantastic choice for those who already own laundry appliances. Washer-dryer hookups offer renters the option to choose their own brand and style, from the used to the energy efficient and everything in between.

Cons: If you don’t already have your own washer and dryer set, there is a significant upfront fee involved when making the purchase. You can help offset this fee by purchasing used appliances or asking your landlord if they provide the option to rent a washer and dryer from them for a small monthly fee.

On-Site Laundry Facilities

Pros: On-site laundry facilities are undeniably convenient for many residents. You don’t have to search for a laundromat, and cleaning your linens involves just a short walk (aside from the usual amount of effort). You can also enjoy a lower energy bill with this option.

Cons: There is a small fee required to use the on-site laundry facilities at most communities. There are also certain etiquette rules involved when navigating a shared laundry room.

To decide which option is best for you, consider how often and how much laundry you plan to do on a regular basis. Will you be cleaning up after a few kids or a puppy? Are you going to be in your new rental for a while? Make a pro-con list of your own, and the right choice will emerge from the land of lost socks.
