Moving to New York City after a job transfer, after obtaining a new job, or when new opportunities become available can be exciting. The problem is that you may worry about finding the right neighborhood for your young children. Fortunately, New York City has many neighborhoods where families will fit right in.

Greenwich Village

Although Greenwich Village does not have the glamorous reputation that other areas of the city maintain and develop, it is a great place to raise children. The neighborhood features the super-sized comic book store, Forbidden Planet, which is perfect for young children, teenagers and even young adults who still enjoy keeping up with their favorite stories.

According to Time Out New York Kids, Washington Square Park is the heart of the village and it offers a wealth of entertainment in the form of street musicians, jugglers and a variety of visitors to the central fountain.

Washington Heights

Washington Heights is a great neighborhood for families because it features green spaces, beautiful pre-war apartments and reasonable prices. The neighborhood has a large number of families and is densely populated, but there are excellent schools for school-aged children and parks provide a great place for children to play and interact with other families.

Although Washington Heights is a budget-friendly area for growing families, it is close enough to the Upper West Side to enjoy the museums and other cultural activities.

Battery Park City

According to the New York Daily News, Battery Park City features a playground that was designed by Frank Gehry that is perfect for children during the summer months. The playground gives them a space to enjoy outdoor activities and allows them to interact with other children in the same age group.

The neighborhood looks out over the New York Harbor, so it provides stunning views of the Statue of Liberty and Liberty Island. The conservatory offers a cultural experience for older children, teens and adult residents. The city is a short commute to Wall Street, which is ideal if you plan to work in the Financial District. Although the cost is relatively high, the area is safe for children and has a variety of child-friendly activities available.

Tribeca

If you are raising children, then Tribeca is a great location for a quiet and affordable lifestyle. According to Time Out New York Kids, Tribeca is the home of the Manhattan Youth Center and it features a combination of old charm with chic and modern conveniences. It is a trendy neighborhood that has a variety of activities for young and growing children, but teenagers may find other neighborhoods more appealing.

Moving to New York City can seem daunting, especially if you have young children or you are planning to have children in the near future. Fortunately, the city has family-friendly neighborhoods that offer a variety of activities that appeal to children. The key is focusing your search for an apartment on the neighborhoods that are appropriate for your concerns and family.
