Ah, you’re finally done! The boxes are all unpacked and you can finally sit back, relax, and enjoy your new apartment. But wait, is there something you forgot? It’s easy to overlook filling out a change of address card, especially in the age of email. But you still need to make sure the post office knows how to find you.
Steps to Changing Your Address After Moving
Forward your mail. You can do this in advance and choose the day you want forwarding to start. It’s usually free and you can do it in-person or online. If you do this online, they might ask for a dollar to verify your identity via your credit card. If you are moving with family, make sure you select the “family” option and not just the “individual” mail forwarding.
Update your banking information, credit cards, and your driver’s license. Your license should be changed shortly after you move. If you stay in state, you can get a free address update card that you carry with your current license. For out of state, you’ll need a new license. While you’re at it, change your vehicle registration.
The IRS will automatically pull your update from USPS, but it’s a good idea to contact them in person. You can use form 8822 on their website.
Make sure all your credit card companies and loan providers (such as your car loan) are aware of your new address.
As your mail is forwarded, update your address with friends, relatives, and organizations who might not realize you’ve moved.
Make sure healthcare providers know your new address (even if you’ll be using new providers in your new location) just in case they need to contact you.
Update your shipping and billing address with online shopping sites you use frequently.
Make sure your pet’s ID tags are updated with your new address. Since pets can get nervous during a move and sometimes try to run away, do this before moving day if possible.
If you’re a frequent traveler, make sure your luggage tags are updated, as well.
