Trophy surrounded by smoke and confetti

The stage is set. The end zone beckons. But this isn't just about football. It’s about showcasing two cities and the unique flair, rich history, and traditions that make them stand out. As the San Francisco 49ers and the Kansas City Chiefs face off on Sunday, we’re putting the spotlight on the cities they represent. When it comes to renting, would you want to call the Bay Area or the Heart of America home? Touchdowns and fumbles alike, here’s a play-by-play on what it’s like to rent in both cities.

San Francisco: The Stylish City by the Bay

The famous Lombard Street in San Francisco, California.

Known for its iconic Golden Gate Bridge, cable cars, and hilly streets lined with Victorian houses, San Francisco is a popular destination for tourists and residents alike. From the Castro to the Haight and from Alcatraz to the Painted Ladies, San Francisco’s history is woven throughout its fashionable neighborhoods. Here are some things you’ll love about San Francisco:

The Food

San Francisco is known for its diverse food scene, with a vast array of options from gourmet restaurants to street food. Whether you’re craving fresh seafood at Fisherman’s Wharf or authentic Chinatown cuisine, you won’t be disappointed.

The Culture

The city is home to numerous museums, galleries, and theaters, showcasing everything from contemporary art to Broadway shows. With events like the annual Pride parade and the renowned Bay to Breakers race, there’s always something happening in San Francisco.

The Job Market

As the hub for many tech companies and startups, San Francisco offers a thriving job market for those in the technology industry. It also has a strong presence in finance, tourism, and healthcare.

Not every city is perfect, and San Francisco certainly has its challenges. Here are some things to consider if you want to move to San Francisco:

The Cost of Living

San Francisco’s high cost of living could be a blocker for those hoping to score big on an apartment in the city. San Francisco has some of the highest rent and housing prices in the country. The current price of a one-bedroom apartment in San Francisco is $2,816, which is slightly lower than last year. However, it’s still quite a bit higher than the national average rent of $1,494.

Traffic and Transportation

San Francisco is known for its traffic congestion, especially during rush hour. Luckily, public transportation options like BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) and Muni buses can help alleviate some of this. Many people in San Francisco prefer biking or walking to get around. The city is very pedestrian- and bicycle friendly, with plenty of dedicated paths and lanes.

San Francisco scores touchdowns for food, culture, and the job market. However, the cost of living and traffic could run interference on your quest to find an affordable San Francisco apartment

Kansas City: At Home in America’s Heartland

The Fountain at Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri.

Kansas City is rich in jazz history, famous for its barbecue, and home to elegant fountains. This Midwestern gem has plenty to offer, so let’s keep that forward momentum going and explore the City of Fountains.

The Start-Ups

Kansas City is an entrepreneurial hub with a growing start-up scene. With numerous resources and support systems for new businesses, the city encourages innovation while providing a lower cost of living. A one-bedroom apartment in Kansas City averages $1,116 per month, which is below the national average.

The Neighborhoods

Whether it's the trendy Crossroads Arts District or the historic charm of Hyde Park, Kansas City has neighborhoods to fit every lifestyle. If you love concerts and a fun, funky vibe, then the Power & Light district is the place to be. Music lovers will adore 18th and Vine, Kansas City’s historic jazz district. And those who crave history and shopping can’t go wrong in River Market

The Fountains

Kansas City has over 200 fountains. The only city with more fountains than Kansas City is Rome. The first fountains built in the city date back to the 1800s when water troughs for horses were set up. Today, you’ll find fountains in every shape and size, ranging from whimsical to elaborate.

So, when might Kansas City cause you to cry foul? Here are some things to consider before you move to Kansas City:

The Weather

The weather in Kansas City is less of a fumble and more like pass interference (in the form of a tornado). Kansas City is in the heart of tornado alley, and because of this, most homes are required to have reinforced basements. However, its distinctive four seasons and sunny, warm summers make up for the wild spring weather. The winters can be cold, but not overly so, with an average temperature of around 29 degrees and an average snowfall of just over 18 inches.

The Topography

While many people enjoy the rolling hills of the plains, it isn’t for everyone. If you’re a water sports enthusiast, living in the Midwest won’t give you many opportunities for water skiing, surfing, or swimming. And while Kansas City is hilly, it isn’t exactly conducive to snow skiing or mountain biking. However, the city has some fantastic parks to explore, including Slope Park and Snow Creek. Slope Park provides hiking trails and a swimming pool, while Snow Creek offers skiing, tubing, and snowboarding on artificial snow.

To recap, Kansas City is a terrific, affordable city where you’ll find terrific neighborhoods and amazing barbecue. However, Kansas City might not be the right call if you prefer to live near the water or mountains, or if you fear the possibility of tornadoes.

Are you a fan of San Francisco, with its streetcars and bayside vibes? Or do you prefer the down-to-earth charm of Kansas City? Either way, both cities score touchdowns in our book. To tailgate off that thought, here’s great food, good company, and dances in the end zone.

Helping 100 million renters find their perfect fit.

Alecia Pirulis

For more than 14 years, I've been helping renters find their perfect home. As part of a military family, I grew up in a variety of rentals, from apartments and houses to duplexes and condos, so I understand and appreciate what renters face when trying to find a new home. When I'm not writing, I enjoy spending time with my two sons, playing video games, and reading British mystery novels.
