Garden mural on wall

Creating a unique statement wall in your apartment is easier than you think - and you don't have to commit to a permanent design to make it count. You can try out a range of different motifs and styles without breaking the bank or affecting your security deposit. Here’s how to temporarily add some personality to your apartment.

1. Make use of removable wall decals or stickers. With a quick search on the Internet, you’ll find a wide range of removable art, from abstract designs to flowers to cartoon characters. When it comes time to remove your wall decals, use soapy water. If your walls are painted with a gloss latex or oil-based enamel, use your hair dryer to heat up the decal before removing. Peel carefully so it doesn’t tear or remove paint from the wall.  You can also remove stickers and decals with adhesive remover.

2. Hang some picture frames. Picture frames are one of the simplest ways to transform your wall – they can also be easily removed without leaving any trace behind. Plus, you can create an eye-catching effect by arranging them in a series of isometric patterns.

3. Use painter’s tape. This is an easy way to adhere lightweight artwork to the wall, such as hand-drawn pictures, posters, or maps.

4. Get creative with washi tape. These beautiful tapes come in a variety of colors, from pastel to neon, and in a variety of designs, such as stripes, flowers, polka dots, and abstract. Get several you like and create a design on the wall. It can be a simple grid, complicated interlinking boxes, a crisscross pattern, or stripes.

5. Create a wall with a room divider. A colorful room divider can add some separation to your space and act as a eye-catching temporary “wall.”

6. Adorn a wall with fabric. Cut some fabric to fit the space. Using a paint roller, apply liquid starch on the wall and over the fabric to hold it in place. Or, if you don’t want to use liquid starch, try using painter’s tape to hold the fabric in place.

7. Make some stand-up art. If you don’t want to try covering an entire wall with washi tape or fabric, get some large canvases from the craft store (the taller the better) and cover that with fabric or washi tape (or if you’re feeling inspired, paint your own pictures or designs). You can hang these using removable wall hooks, or you can simply lean them against the wall, either on the floor or on a shelf.

Since all these options are temporary, you can remove them whenever you feel like it! Keep it simple and change it up with the seasons or go all-out to create that “wow” factor. Designing your own wall is simple to do, lots of fun, and best of all, you won’t have to spend much time (if any) repairing the walls when you move out.
